Problem Note 59188: Updating an expired internal account password fails with the message "The password for this user ID has expired. Create a new password"

DetailsHotfixAboutRate It

When an internal user's password is expired and a SAS® Metadata Server cluster is being used, an error might occur when the user tries to change the expired password.

The error might occur under the following conditions:

  • SAS Metadata Server is clustered.
  • The SAS user's internal account (for example, myuserid@saspw) has expired because the Set a custom password expiration period check box is selected on the user's internal account as shown in the following display:
New User Properties window in SAS Management Console

When the user with the expired password attempts to log on to the SAS Metadata Server from SAS® Management Console or from SAS® Personal Login Manager, a Change Password dialog box appears with the following message:

The password for this user ID has expired. Create a new password.
Change Password dialog box

After entering information into the fields in the dialog box and clicking OK, the user encounters the following error:

The application could not log on to the server "metahost1.company.com metahost2.company.com metahost3.company.com:8561". The machine name is not valid.
Error message stating: The application could not log on to the server

At this point, the password change request fails, and the password is not changed in the metadata.

Workaround

To work around this issue, edit the connection profile to specify only one metadata server host name. It does not matter whether that metadata server is a master or a slave. See the following display as an example:

SMC connection profile with only one host listed

When you edit the connection profile in this way, the password change succeeds. After the password change is completed, you do not need to re-edit the connection profile. SAS Management Console automatically updates the connection profile with the list of all metadata server cluster node host names.
